MTN 5G Network Update: MTN Conducted Africa’s First 5G Technology Trial Hits 20GBPS.
MTN 5G Network Update January 2018: The world is finally moving on from the era of 4G networks and Africa is not left out. MTN in partnership with Ericsson following the signing of memorandum of understanding between the two companies at AfricaCom 2017 has conducted its first 5G technology trial and hits download speed above 20GBPS with less than 5ms latency. MTN said it is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa.
MTN 5G Technology Trial in South Africa.
The trial was carried out in Johannesburg, South Africa based on commercially available baseband hardware and 5G mobility is supported.
According the company’s CTIO (Chief Technology & Innovation Officer) for MTN SA, Giovanni Chiarelli, the deployment of mtn 5g network for commercial use will led to rapid growth of technology integration into sectors like Agriculture, minnig, Construction, IoT (Internet of Things) in Africa etc.
With 5G, remote healthcare through connected robots could offer world-class surgery in the most remote parts of the continent and the world. Self-driving cars could change the face of road safety, along with smart agriculture, smart mining and smart cities. There is no doubt that 5G will offer the consumer higher speeds and lower latencies but to achieve this, we need the capacity that comes with additional spectrum thus once again we call on the government to urgently release the much-needed spectrum that is required in South Africa, to lower the cost of data and drive growth and development for all South Africans, he said.
However, Mr Giovanni Chiarellihas raised a serious concern and call for the aid of South Africa government in the matter. According to him;
MTN is ready to deploy the technology commercially but could not do so until it had access to additional frequency spectrum.
Mr Giovanni continue, The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa‚ which regulates spectrum‚ has not yet allocated spectrum for 4G infrastructure‚ TechCentral reported‚ forcing operators to reallocate 2G and 3G spectrum.
There is no doubt that 5G will offer the consumer higher speeds and lower latency‚ but to achieve this we need the capacity that comes with additional spectrum, he concluded.
Nokia & Vodacom on 5G Technology.
Ericsson is one among several tech companies leading the development of the fifth generation mobile networks/wireless systems. Among others are Nokia, Samsung, Huawei and Intel. Vodacom which happens to be MTN rival in South Africa has also reportedly partnered with Nokia late last year to launch the 5G technology trial in South Africa. Since November 2017, there is still no news on this.
Benefits of 5G Over 4G.
- 1,000 times capacity improvement.
- 100 times faster (speed).
- 100 times the connected devices.
- 10 times lower latency.
- 10 times reliability.
Note: Latency is the delay you experience before data transfer commence after an instruction for its transfer while ms means milliseconds (0.001 seconds). So the lower the latency, the better.
