This article contains the list of all the oil producing states in Nigeria. The largest oil producing state in Nigeria is Akwa-Ibom while the top 4 states responsible for about 90% of the total crude oil production in the country are Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa State.
I will first list all the oil states in Nigeria and then list the top 4 in 2017 with little background information.
List of Oil Producing States in Nigeria 2017.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest producer of oil and the 6th largest globally producing about 2.5 million barrels every day. It has 36 states and Abuja (Federal Capital Territory) with three major languages which are Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. Out of these 36 states, crude oil (Petroleum) is extracted from just 10 of them and 4 of these 10 states produces over 80 per cent of the total oil.
The oil producing regions of Nigeria are reffered to as Niger-Delta region which consists of 8 states that are currently contributing to the daily total oil production in Nigeria. Below are the oil producing states in Nigeria.
- Lagos state was recently added to the list after exportable amount was discovered last year (2016).
- All the above states are Niger-Delta states excluding Lagos.
- Kogi and Anambra are expected to make the list anytime from now.
Top 4 Oil Producing States in Nigeria.
Crude generates about 90 per cent of Nigeria’s total export revenue and remember its just one of the numerous natural resources in Nigeria.
1.) Akwa- Ibom State.
As at the time of this report (2017), Akwa ibom is currently the largest and highest producer of crude oil in Nigeria. It top the list of crude oil producing states in nigeria after displacing Rivers state a while back.
Akwa Ibom is responsible for about 31.4% of the total daily oil production. It has Uyo as its capital and harbours over 5 million people across its 31 local government area (LGA).
2.) Delta State.
Delta state is the second largest oil producing state in Nigeria with about 21.56% of the daily production. The state capital is Asaba, but Warri remains the heartbeat and the most popular city in the state. It has a population of about 4 million across its 25 LGA.
3.) Rivers State.
Rivers make the 3rd position on my list with about 21.43% of the total daily oil production. It use to be the largest oil producing state in Nigeria. It is a home of over 5 million people and has 23 LGA. The major ethnic group in Rivers states are Ikwerre, Okrika, Upobo, Kalabari. It is the third largest producer of oil in Nigeria and Port-Harcourt (PHC) is its capital.
4.) Bayelsa State.
The last on my list and fourth largest producer of oil in Nigeria is Bayelsa. Its capital is Yenegoa and it is responsible for about 18.07% of daily oil production. Pursuant to the last population census in Nigeria, Bayelsa has over 1.9 million people across its 8 local government areas.
The remaining oil and gas producing states in Nigeria produces less than 3% of the total oil each. That’s all on the 2017 list of crude oil producing states in Nigeria.
