Wizkid full real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun. He was born on the 16th day of July 1990 which will make him 27 years old by July 16th of this year (2017). He is the last child and only Son of his nuclear family with 12 female siblings. His father who married three wives practice Islam while his mother is a Pentecostal Christian.
Wizkid was born in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria which makes him a Lagosian and a Nigerian. As i have said earlier, Ayo started his career in church, formed a group called glorious five which managed to release an album before it was disbanded. He went by the stage name Lil Prinz then, before he changed it to Wizkid.
He later met OJB Jezreel, a record producer and while visiting OJB’s PointBeat Studios, he watched 2 Face Idibia record songs for his Grass 2 Grace album and Sound Sultan’s debut album, Jagbajantis. He also worked with MI, Ikechuckwu and Naeto C who he called one of his mentor and coach at the age of 15.
Now his real career started when he signed a record deal with Banky W’s EME (Empire Mates Entertainment) in 2009 (at the age of 19) and featured in Banky W’s album, The W Experience, M.I’s Fast Money, Fast Cars, and Kel’s Turn by Turn.
He started recording his first album, Superstar in 2009 and released Holla at your boy as the album’s lead single in January 2010, Tease Me/Bad Guys as the album second single in April 2010, Don’t Dull as the album third single in December 2010. Among other singles in the album are Love My Baby, Pakurumo and Oluwa Lo Ni.
The album was officially launched on 12 June 2011, by EME at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites which featured the performances of prominent artists including Banky W, 2face Idibia, Skales, Wande Coal, Samklef, D’Prince, Olamide, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, eLDee, Lynxxx and Seyi Shay.
He started recording his second album, Ayo in 2012 and released Jaiye Jaiye ft Femi Kuti as its Lead Single in May 2013, On Top Your Matter as the album second single in October 2013 whose video was shot in South Africa. Among other singles in the album are One Question, Joy, Bombay and Show You the Money. The album was officially released in September 2014.
After 2014, wizkid has released Ojuelegba (January 2015), African Bad Girl with Chris Brown (April 2015), Expensive Shit (May 2015), he appeared as a featured artists on Drake’s One Dance in April 2016 and released a promotional single titled Like This in June 2016. Like this premiere on Drake’s OVO Sound Radio. Wizkid collaboration with drake gave him an international recognition.
Wizkid break up story from EME started in 2012 and money was at the centre of the controversy. Wizkid was getting 25 percent from every performance, Banky W and Segun Demuren were getting 50 percent and Osagie, Wizkid’s former manager, was getting the remaining 25 percent. Ayo wanted a 50-50 share with Banky W, a proposal which was unacceptable to Banky W. He left, reunited and left EME again within 2013 and 2014.
But he officially part ways with EME on March 1 2017 following the release of his second studio album, Ayo and expiration of his 5-year recording contract.
While Wizkid was having problem with EME, he established his own label imprint Starboy Entertainment in 2013. Within 2013 till date, Wizkid has signed Maleek Berry, Uzezi Oniko and Okiemute Oniko, popularly known as Legendury Beatz, L.A.X, Efya, R2Bees, and Mr Eazi to Starboy Entertainment.
